Natural Poker Player

What i mean is, like i was a natural runner, does that mean i didnt have to run and work hard to rise to the top? No, i had to work out hard to be in the elite, but could i beat 90 percent of runners, non runners if i didnt work out that hard or at all, yes, so thats the natural part.
Some people are born with more fast twitch fibers than slow twitch fibers in their muscles. So ya got people who are better sprinters or endurance runners depending on what ya got.
So your “naturally” predisposed to be better at certain things based on that. But you can train your muscles to perform better at distance if your a sprinter and so on.
In poker, your not born with a certain genetic make up that makes u a natural at poker.
But you are born with a brain that may understand concepts, strategy, pot odds things like that better than someone else. That brain can also be trained just as the sprinter can be trained ot be a distance runner, it just takes more work.
Some people are just plain lucky. that doesnt mean they are a natural, it means they are damn lucky lol
I think i fall into the luck category. Before i played holdem, i won with regularity at our home poker games, whatever the game. same with board games.
Do i think its all luck that i win alot. no, i know i got some skillz lol But its a combination of being luckier than the average person, and using knowledge learned, and coupled with patience i think.
So where as i suck at math, i cant figure out my pot odds if my life depended on it, i make up for it with my lucky rabbits foot and patience and knowledge of the stuff i can figure out and then apply what works for me.
Im with floppy on the book stuff, i have quite a few and im the same, get a qaurter through them, get bored, rather learn with ojt.
i think some people are “naturally” better at learning things hands on, others are better at learning via books,or whatever method works best for them.
So to me there isnt a natural in poker, like there is a natural athlete, dancer, whatever. You might be a natural brainiac, but that doesnt garauntee a winning poker player.
Its the meshing of all the elements, intelligence or using it correctly, patience, psycology, adaptability, aggression ,instinct, so many different things and last but not least, luck.
A top runner can win races with just his fast twitch fibers and working out, and doesnt require all the elements that poker does for winning.
A runner never won a 100 meter dash by luck. Unless the other 8 people in the race all pulled a hamstrings at the same time, and that would be bad karma lol
Hence the diff in being a natural.

Want to play aggressive poker, but don’t think you’ve got the bottle. Then this might be the solution for you. Not only does it give you a good foundation to your game, if you keep employing this system, is becomes a great indicator about your opponents play – even if you’ve never played against them before.

Poker After Dark

I think any poker tournament would be mostly boring if you didn’t edit it down to just the “interesting” hands. The show definitely quieted down after Hellmuth was eliminated. My favorite TV poker show is High Stakes Poker by a mile, but I actually liked this in that you got to see more of the run of the mill hands that make up most tournaments. I liked that you got to see all the hole cards, even the ones that were folded. I like to see what the pros are and aren’t playing in the different positions and situations. (The WSoP broadcasts don’t show a lot of the folded hands.) Most of the table talk wasn’t very interesting, but ther e were a few little tidbits here and there.

Playing Texas Hold’em heads up against a single opponent requires a completely different strategy than playing at a full table. While some players may choose a heads-up game on the internet, the most common situation is during tournament play when it gets down to the final two players. Many players I have talked to tell me that they have the most difficulty adjusting to playing heads-up, and are not very successful when put in this situation. The most common reason for this is that they are used to playing a tighter game. In a heads-up situation, you can’t play tight and expect to win. You must loosen up. When you are playing heads up you can’t afford to wait. Many times it comes down to who can steal the most blinds. Therefore you must loosen up and call more or you will go broke. Read More »»»

You all know how much I hate math. I’m not a stupid person, I got A’s in school, etc. I just hate math. In school I always had to write it down. It does not compute in my brain lmao.
I cannot just sit at the table and figure pot odds. I need a pencil and a piece of paper, then I can. The thing is.. I may not even do the whole problem on the paper.. I may just jot down numbers and then I would be able to see it… if I figure 37-9 odds It isn’t going to pop into my head that it is 4:1 odds. Is there hope for me?

Interesting hand

It’s amazing to me how differently you see poker than me. You have an incredible mind for the odds. Which is something I’d love to learn. My mind gets a bit lost with all the numbers, which is funny since I am in the accounting field. You’d think I’d be better at it. Instead, I tend to play more with my gut and instinct which is possibly why I’m so inconsistent with my results when I play. It’s also a huge reason why I don’t do that well on the internet. It’s harder for me to get a feel for the persons reactions to their cards when I play on the internet since they aren’t in the same room.

Poker room - small story

I arrived at Foxwoods Saturday morning via a bus and made my way to coat check to check my bag until I could check in. I went right down to the poker room so I could get on a limit table before it got too busy. I was sitting at a 4/8 table playing.

There have been several times in my life when I have come to know that others are and/or do things differently than I.
For instance, one time my mom was telling me about a dream she had. She said, with a kind of awe, "It was even in color." I said, "In color? Aren’t all of your dreams in color?"
She said, no, she almost always dreams in black and white. Wow! That was amazing to me. I couldn’t, and never had, imagined anyone dreaming in black and white, because all of my dreams were always in color.
Here’s another example. One time my daughter said she was really hungry and rubbed her abdomen and said she was really feeling it. I asked her, "You mean you are feeling hungry there?" She said yes, she was. Again, I had never imagined anyone feeling the sensation of hunger down in their abdomen. I always feel hunger in my throat.

The World Series of Poker was created in 1968 by Tom Moore of San Antonio Texas at the Holiday Hotel and Casino in Reno Nevada as an invitational poker event. In 1970 Benny Binion and his family took the idea of the World Series of Poker and created a series of tournaments. As the years drew on and poker gained popularity so did the number of players and addition of more tournaments. The traditions of the World Series of Poker seemed cast in stone, and comfortably so at Binions Horseshoe in Las Vegas Nevada. The Poker Hall of Fame also located in the birth place of WSOP seems like the only place in the world that is fitting and natural. Evolution of the ownership of the brand WSOP changed hands in 2003 from Binions to Harrahs, once again bringing growth and change. But tradition remained steady as the WSOP was still at home in Las Vegas. Only the casino location had to be changed from Binions to the Rio to accommodate the growing number of players. Harrahs has done an impressive job with the WSOP thus far in development and marketing, but what about integrity and tradition?

Keeping your emotions in check

Since my last article, I am back to playing the 5-10 NL and 10-20 NL games on Bodog. Recently, I have not been able to lose. I have been playing my game and letting no one affect that, even though Bodog is filled with young kids like myself, who love running their mouths at the tables. Playing these higher staked games, I have realized that your emotions play a more significant role while playing than your actual poker skills. You can never get too high or too low. Once you get too excited about winning a large pot, you will lose a large pot at another table. If you let this affect your style of play, you will not only have lost at your one table, but you will tilt away money at your other table. Thus, the title of my article, and Rule #1: Keep your emotions under control!
