Poker is not a card game, it is a wagering game based on imperfect information. The more information you have, the better your decisions can be.
Reading people and ‘tells’ are qualifying information - rarely should they be used on their own, but as a means of qualifying what a previous action or reaction is. The same tell (for example a jumping neck pulse) can mean that someone is nervous or excited - but are they nervous because they’re pure bluffing, or nervous because they have a strong hand at the moment and they’re protecting it against you drawing to a stronger hand, or they’re on a monster and excited about how much money they’re going to make! You can make a better guess by comparing this with how much they’ve bet before you pick up that tell especially if you know they understand concepts such as pot odds.
You can get a lot of information from people when you watch their reactions - ie you make a move that gives them a hard choice and see what they do.
Bluffing in poker at it’s most basic comes into the concept of “strong means weak and weak means strong” and this is probably one of the most common concepts I’ve seen in business too.
I like to work like I play poker - strong tight-agressive. If I have a project or a piece of work at risk of failure from a lack of management or board buy in, I’ll do the (diplomatic equivalent) of stomping to the board room and demanding the resources and buy-in I need otherwise I’m walking because I can’t do my job.
Raise or fold - it’s the only way.
